The Chinese Economy and its Impact on Central Massachusetts Families and Businesses

Assumption University will once again join organizations across the United States in hosting a local discussion following the 14th annual national CHINA Town Hall keynote event on Tuesday, November 10. Keynote speaker Ray Dalio, founder, co-chief investment officer, and co-chairman of Bridgewater Associates, LP, will provide insight on the most critical issues facing the U.S. – China relations, as well as the global community in the 21st century.

Prior to Dalio’s virtual lecture, which begins at 7 p.m., Assumption’s Eric Drouart, MSBA, professor of practice in management, will discuss China’s challenges in the 21st century and how these affect the average family in Central Massachusetts as well as local businesses. Prof. Drouart’s segment begins via Zoom at 6 p.m., and will subsequently join Dalio’s lecture.

According to the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations (NCUSCR), the sponsoring organization of the nationwide event, friction between the United States and China in politics, security, and trade have a direct impact in lives of every American. To encourage a wider discussion of how average Americans are impacted during these turbulent times, this special nationwide CHINA Town Hall will encourage conversation about key issues, risks and opportunities in the Sino-American relationship. This year, NCUSCR will host a week of virtual events featuring discussions on critical topics facing both countries. 

Dalio is a renowned investor, philanthropist, and New York Times best-selling author. He and his family have been deeply involved in business and philanthropic efforts in China for 35 years. Dalio is the author of the best-selling Principles: Life and Work and The Changing World Order: Why Nations Succeed and Fail, which will be released this winter.

This is the ninth year Assumption has participated in this national event, which is hosted by the NCUSCR and sponsored locally by Assumption’s Grenon School of Business. Established in 1966, NCUSCR has long been the leading American nonprofit, nonpartisan public affairs organization devoted to building constructive and durable relationships between the United States and Greater China.
