Campus Police Forego Shaving to Support Veterans and Families

During the month of November, Assumption University Campus Police officers will give their razors a break in support of an effort to raise funds for Veterans, service members, military families, and families who have lost loved ones in the military or whose loved ones suffer from physical injuries or post-traumatic stress disorders.

Sponsored by Home Base, a non-profit organization founded by the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital, the effort encourages individuals to donate $100 to participate in the no-shave initiative while soliciting donations from the community. This is the third year Assumption’s Campus Police is participating in the event.

“The Campus Police Department is comprised of several veterans as well as one member who is still actively serving in the military,” said Lt. Anthony Krow, who added that the department has a clean-shaven policy for its officers. “By participating in the Home Base No Shave campaign, the facial hair creates a conversation, which leads to explain why we’re growing facial hair and ultimately greater awareness for the cause.”

Home Base’s No Shave campaign is celebrated by police departments across New England.  The Assumption University Campus Police Department aims to raise $1,000 for the cause, which will be contributed to Home Base’s overall fundraising goal of $350,000. In the last two years, Assumption Campus Police has raised nearly $2,000.

Home Base, the largest private-sector clinic in the nation dedicated to this cause, was founded after the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 and 2007 when members of the Red Sox and Massachusetts General Hospital representatives met with hospitalized Veterans at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Since its start, Home Base has provided over 21,000 Veterans and families with care and support. In addition, they have trained over 73,000 clinicians, educators, first responders and community members.
