“G.K. Chesterton” to Visit Assumption and Discuss What’s Wrong with the World

Professional historian, John C. “Chuck” Chalberg, Ph.D., will deliver a lecture in the persona of G.K. Chesterton, a Catholic convert and apologist on Tuesday, October 8, at 7 p.m. in the Jeanne Y. Curtis Performance Hall of the Tsotsis Family Academic Center on the Assumption campus, 500 Salisbury Street, Worcester. Chalberg will lecture on “What’s Still Wrong with the World,” based upon the book written by Chesterton over a century ago. 

G.K Chesterton was known as the “prince of paradox” because he believed that the truth was buried in contradiction. The most important paradox to Chesterton was Christ Himself, wholly God and wholly man. Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922 but was a Catholic in almost every respect at the time that he wrote Orthodoxy in 1908. Chalberg will draw upon Chesterton’s wit, wisdom, and humor while examining and contrasting topics of concern in the 1900s to their continued impact and interest in today’s society. These topics include the state of the family, feminism, education, democracy, and the general state of the country. 

Chalberg, a Minnesota native, earned his bachelor’s degree from Regis University and a master’s degree and doctorate in American history from the University of Minnesota. Along with teaching American history for a number of years, his reviews and essays have been published by notable publications such as Gilbert!, The Weekly Standard, Chronicles, The Imaginative Conservative, and Intellectual Takeout. 

This event is part of the 2019-20 President’s Lecture Series at Assumption, a public forum in which important ethical, spiritual, and human issues are illuminated and examined within the Catholic intellect tradition.
