Do Muslims and Christians Believe in the Same God?

Sandra Toenies Keating, Ph.D., associate professor of theology at Providence College, will discuss the engagement and theological exchange between Muslims and Christians during her lecture, “Do Muslims and Christians Believe in the Same God?” on Tuesday, March 19 at 7 p.m. in the Salon of the La Maison Française building on the Assumption campus, 500 Salisbury St.

Muslims and Christians have been engaged in theological exchange for over a millennium, and today that conversation is even more critical. During her lecture, Prof. Keating will explore the Church’s teachings on Islam and the theological implications of recent developments in Catholic-Muslim relations. 

Prof. Keating teaches courses in Catholic theology, Islam, and world religions. She has published numerous articles and a book on Muslim-Christian relations entitled, Defending the “People of Truth” in the Early Islamic Period: The Christian Apologies of Abu Ra’itah. She previously served on the Vatican Commission for Religious Relations with Muslims from 2005-12; is a member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop’s Mid-Atlantic dialogue; and participates regularly in Catholic-Muslim dialogues, both in the United States and abroad. Prof. Keating also serves on several boards of directors, frequently lectures on the topic of Muslim-Christian relations, and consults in the field. 

This event is part of the 2018-19 President’s Lecture Series at Assumption, a public forum in which important ethical, spiritual and human issues are illuminated and examined within the Catholic intellectual tradition.
