Assumption’s History Program Recognized for Value

College Factual has included Assumption in its recently released 2019 Best History Colleges for the Money.  Assumption’s history program was third in Massachusetts and in the top 10 percent nationally for value, according the organization.

Assumption’s history program improved by 10 slots over last year’s national ranking.

“History comes alive in the Assumption classroom,” said Lance Lazar, Ph.D., associate professor of history and director of the medieval and early modern studies program. According to Prof. Lazar, the Assumption History Department has a team of dedicated teacher-scholars who take advantage of great local institutions like the American Antiquarian Society, the Worcester Art Museum, the Russian Icon Museum, St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, and other venues to enrich classroom instruction and allow for meaningful internship opportunities. “Students appreciate the individual attention and hands-on experience working with original documents and productive scholars in the Assumption history program.”

At Assumption, many history majors pursue careers in law, education, business, museum work, and public history, among other areas.  Students often combine their coursework with study at Assumption’s Rome, Italy, Campus or other study abroad programs, along with interdisciplinary programs like women’s studies and medieval and early modern studies. Students interested in law school can also take advantage of one of Assumption’s partnerships with several distinguished law schools.

According to College Factual, the organization’s Best History Schools for the Money ranking takes into account the “average yearly cost of the school, the average time students take to graduate, and the quality the school provides to students.”
