Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
An email message sent to the Assumption Community on January 20, 2025:
Dear Assumption Community,
As we reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we are reminded of his profound commitment to truth and his unwavering belief in the dignity of every human person. In a passage Dr. King often quoted from The Confessions, St. Augustine wrote that “our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” This restlessness is not a burden but a call—a call to seek truth and to recognize the divine image in every individual.
At Assumption University, this same pursuit animates our mission. As a Catholic liberal arts institution, we believe that the search for truth is intrinsically good and enduringly meaningful, and we affirm that every person engaged in this pursuit deserves respect, belonging, and care. Our shared commitment to the dignity of all is rooted in the understanding that each of us reflects the image of God in unique and invaluable ways.
Dr. King’s example calls us to engage one another with both restless and generous hearts. It challenges us to live with attentiveness and care, recognizing the inherent worth of every person we encounter.
As we honor Dr. King’s life and work, let us take inspiration from his vision of a world shaped by truth, friendship, and human dignity. May we carry forward that vision in our daily lives, dedicating ourselves anew to the values that define us as a community.
Sincerely,
Greg Weiner, Ph.D.
President
