(CANCELED) Lecture: Questions of Race, Identity, and Vocation

Apr. 16, 2020
11:00 PM - 12:00 AM
La Maison Salon

With political tensions escalating in the United States, many struggle with questions regarding race, identity, and vocation. Boston College Associate Professor of Theology Andrew Prevot will explore these questions through a lecture that explores the anxieties of identity faced by students of various backgrounds. Prof. Prevot’s lecture will be presented on Thursday, April 16, at 7 p.m. in the La Maison Salon at Assumption College, 500 Salisbury Street, Worcester.

Prof. Prevot believes that “we are not just the boxes in which race puts us; each of us is a mystery, even to ourselves: a unique, precious, and dynamic part of creation.” His lecture will focus on how to think about one’s identity and is supported through his beliefs that one’s identity is not only created through violent racial history, but through the God who made, loves, and calls onto us.

Prof. Prevot, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Theology at Boston College. His areas of research include both spiritual and mystical theology, philosophical theology, continental philosophy of religions, and diversified forms of political, liberation, black, and womanist theology. He is the author of Theology and Race: Black and Womanist Traditions in The United States (Brill, 2018) as well as Thinking Prayer: Theology and Spiritually Amid the Crises of Modernity (Notre Dame, 2015). Prof. Prevot is the coeditor of Anti-Blackness and Christian Ethics (Orbis, 2017), and currently working on a study of the grace of divine union in contemporary mystical theology.

This event is part of the 2019-20 President’s Lecture Series at Assumption, a public forum in which important ethical, spiritual, and human issues are illuminated and examined within the Catholic intellectual tradition. All events in the President’s Lecture Series at Assumption are free and open to the public. RSVPs are encouraged due to limited space. To RSVP, please call or email Sharon Mahoney at 508.767.7322. The lecture is free and open to the public.
